At its heart, it’s a story about looking beyond appearances and learning that kindness and love matter far more than looks. The story follows Belle, a clever young woman who feels out of place in her small village, and the Beast, a prince cursed to live as a monster until he can learn to love and be loved in return. While the story begins quite darkly with the curse being placed upon the Prince, it slowly grows into a warm, funny and uplifting tale — and being Disney, there is of course a happy ending waiting at the end of it all.

Before I even get onto the performance itself, I thought it was such a lovely touch that the principal cast came out afterwards to take photos with the audience. It made the whole evening feel much more personal and showed how appreciative they were of everyone who had come along to support the show. I did find myself wondering though — did anyone ask Gaston for a picture? Judging by the amount of booing he got at the curtain call, maybe not! Bless him.

The show opened with the Prince being cursed and transformed into the Beast. This was done behind a see-through curtain before the actor quickly disappeared behind another screen to change. It worked well enough, although I think the moment could have felt even more magical with a sudden flash of light and blackout to disguise the transformation a little more smoothly. Once that opening scene was over though, the production really burst into life. The stage suddenly filled with colour, music and energy as we were introduced to Belle and the village. I especially liked Belle’s entrance through the audience, as it immediately made everyone feel involved in the story rather than simply watching from a distance.

The actors playing Belle and the Beast both gave strong performances and had a believable connection throughout the show. Belle came across as warm, intelligent and independent, while the Beast balanced the character’s anger and vulnerability really well as the story progressed. However, the standout performer for me was Lumière, played by Matthew Morgan. I really noticed the attention to detail in his performance, especially the way he moved around the stage while still keeping the stiff movements of a candlestick holder — even walking upstairs in character. His French accent remained consistent throughout, and his comic timing got some of the biggest laughs of the night. He definitely seemed to become one of the audience favourites.

My favourite scene in the entire show was what I called “the clapping cups” scene during Be Our Guest. This number was packed with energy, colour and fun, and it was brilliantly staged. Like most people, this is probably the song I instantly think of when I hear Beauty and the Beast, and I was still humming it to myself while leaving the theatre afterwards. The choreography was lively, the costumes were dazzling, and there always seemed to be something happening wherever you looked on stage. Even so, because it’s such an iconic number, I still found myself wanting just a little bit more. Maybe some tap dancing from the plates or one extra surprise moment could have made it even more spectacular.

There were sadly a few technical issues during the performance. At times, some cast members seemed quieter than others or were not always clearly mic’d, which meant I occasionally missed bits of dialogue. There were also moments where parts of the stage were not lit as clearly as they could have been. However, to be fair to the cast, none of this distracted too much from the performances themselves or took away from my enjoyment of the musical.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable production with strong performances, memorable musical numbers and plenty of charm throughout. The show captured the warmth, humour and magic that people love about Beauty and the Beast, and the audience clearly had a wonderful time.

Tinkers Farm, this certainly was a beauty of a show.

Reviewed by – Emma T.

Beauty and the Beast is one of those classic Disney stories that almost everyone knows, but seeing it brought to life on stage still feels special.
