First of all, a very warm welcome to Dynamik Theatre Company<\/strong>, who are first-timers at our BFame Festival. It was a pleasure to see you bring The Addams Family<\/em> to The MAC in Birmingham, and after watching your afternoon matinee, I can certainly see why this company has plenty to be proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Addams Family<\/em> introduces us to the wonderfully eccentric Addams family, a family who have always done things just a little differently. Gomez and Morticia are happily married, but daughter Wednesday has grown up and fallen in love with Lucas, a rather more ‘normal’ young man. The problem is that Wednesday has kept this relationship a secret from her parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Lucas and his parents are invited to the Addams’ home for dinner, Wednesday decides that the truth has to come out. What follows is an evening of secrets, revelations, family arguments, unexpected friendships and, of course, plenty of the wonderfully dark humour that makes the Addams family so much fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are some families you probably wouldn’t want to spend too much time with. The Addams family would certainly be high on that list! Yet somehow, despite their rather unusual approach to life, death, love and everything in between, they are a family that audiences have grown to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always like it when a production doesn’t try to overcomplicate things, and the set here was a good example. Two two-storey rotating stage frames formed the main structure, with the frames being turned to create the different areas. When brought together, they formed a large ‘A’ for Addams, which was a particularly nice touch. It was simple, clever and effective, allowing the performers to remain the main focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lighting was similarly subtle rather than trying to dominate the production, but it worked well with the darker feel of the show. One thing that certainly couldn’t be described as subtle was the talent on stage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Gomez, Sam Andrews-Lyons<\/strong> really held the whole thing together. Gomez is such a big character, and Sam gave him plenty of energy, humour and warmth, along with a great voice. He looked completely at home in the role and carried the story along nicely, while also having some lovely moments with the rest of the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steph Westwood<\/strong> made a terrific Morticia. She certainly looked the part, but it was her voice that really stood out for me. She has a fantastic singing voice and brought the right mixture of sophistication, confidence and that slightly dark Addams humour to the character. Loved the dancing with Sam, the Paso Doble was electric. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie Stait’s<\/strong> Wednesday was, without doubt, one of the audience favourites. There was something immediately engaging about her performance, despite Wednesday’s rather unusual outlook on life! Sophie got the balance between the deadpan humour and the more emotional side of Wednesday just right, and she was clearly enjoying the character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marley Beckford<\/strong> gave us a lovely Pugsley, bringing plenty of youthful energy and enthusiasm to the role. Their relationship with Wednesday was great fun to watch, and they fitted naturally into this wonderfully dysfunctional family. Loved the chains and your reaction \u2014 super job, Marley!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ed Blann’s Fester<\/strong> was another highlight for me. There is something wonderfully odd about Uncle Fester and his complete obsession with the moon, and Ed really embraced that eccentricity. His performance brought plenty of laughs, and his love for the moon was particularly entertaining. The flying to the moon was excellent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kate Green<\/strong> gave us a memorable Grandma, with plenty of character packed into the role, while Evan Moss<\/strong> made the most of Lurch. Sometimes saying very little is actually the hardest thing to do, and Evan’s expressions and physicality said plenty. Loved the singing when it finally happened!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Away from the Addams family, Jake Miles<\/strong> gave Lucas plenty of charm and helped provide the more ‘normal’ side of the story. He certainly had chemistry with Sophie’s Wednesday, which made their relationship believable and enjoyable to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie Harper<\/strong> brought good energy to Mal \u2014 not always easy to do, so nice job, Ollie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex Stait-Bradshaw<\/strong> was excellent as Alice, particularly as we saw more of the character emerge as the story progressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then we have the Ancestors. Caitlin Banks, Isaac Brickstock, Maz Corry, Steve Element, Dylan Foster-Agg, Rosie Harper, Lucas Moss, Elodie O’Gara, Marianna Samara<\/strong> and Daisy Williams<\/strong>, alongside Lauren Toney<\/strong> as Moon\/Ancestor, all helped create the strange and wonderful world surrounding the Addams family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t really highlight anyone in particular, as I don’t know who played which Ancestor, but I will say that the singing and dancing were excellent. The choreography was really well managed, and the whole ensemble worked incredibly well together. There was plenty of energy on stage, and they certainly helped bring the musical numbers to life. Loved the tap and the ballet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, one of the things I particularly enjoyed about this production was how well the whole cast worked together. There were no weak links. Everyone seemed to understand the slightly quirky style that The Addams Family<\/em> needs, and they embraced it. It really did feel like a fantastic team performance<\/strong>, rather than simply a collection of individual performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music was another real strength. The band, led by Oscar Cooper-Spriggs<\/strong> on Keys 1 and as conductor, were excellent throughout. The music was tight and confident, supporting the performers without ever overpowering them. Oscar Cooper-Spriggs and Fiona McCanlis<\/strong> deserve credit for the musical direction, with additional choreography from Caitlin Rice-Jones<\/strong> adding further energy to the production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the scenes, Jamie Poxon’s<\/strong> artistic direction and production design brought everything together, with Jake Taylor<\/strong> handling both lighting design and production management. Aaron Brotherhood’s<\/strong> sound design, supported by Charlotte James<\/strong> on Sound No.2, worked well, while Larissa Moss<\/strong>, Amy Pinfold<\/strong>, Susan Hope<\/strong>, Rhiannah Price<\/strong> and Becky James<\/strong> ensured everything behind the scenes kept moving smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I particularly liked about Dynamik’s The Addams Family<\/em> was that it didn’t need a huge elaborate set or endless technical tricks to entertain. It had a strong cast, good music, some great characters and plenty of humour. The rotating set frames were clever, the performances were consistently strong and the band were excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And ultimately, that’s what you want from The Addams Family<\/em>. A little bit strange, a little bit dark, plenty of laughs and a family that, thankfully, is much more entertaining to watch than it would be to actually live with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and a fantastic team performance from Dynamik Theatre Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
