1930s Berlin. John Halder is a good, liberal-minded, music-loving German professor. He is unremarkable, other than a strange neurotic tic: the imaginary sound of band music plays in the background of his life.

Having caught the attention of the Nazi Party through his book on euthanasia for those who are suffering, Halder is gradually drawn into their system and ideology, pulled into a movement with unthinkable consequences. With the world on the brink of a second World War, can Halder retain his goodness? A tragic story that examines how a ‘good’ man can be corrupted, the dangers of passive acceptance and the rationalisation of evil, as well as how gradual choices can lead to devastating consequences.
